The bible is not a scientific book, it is argued. And I agree. It is way more than that. It is the final and only infallible authority on all science. It tells us how the world is made, how it is sustained, what it requires to flourish and how a lion kills its prey.
Nothing too serious here. Just some bits and pieces I picked up along the way.
Around 1742, French naturalist René Antoine Ferchault de Réaumur identified the fact that worker ants are female.
About 2,500 years earlier, circa 930BC, God mentioned this to Solomon and had him make a note of it (Proverbs 6:6).
In December 2013, the scientific journal, ‘Nature’ in alliance with Flinders University in Australia published findings of more than half a million cubic kilometres of deep water springs lying under the ocean floors.
About 4,000 years earlier, circa 2300BC, God told Noah about these springs and encouraged him to go and tell everyone else (Genesis 7:11).
The bible makes more than 40 references to the great Hittite Empire. Sceptics and scholars mocked the biblical narrative as complete fiction claiming zero evidence.
In 1906, Hugo Winckler uncovered a huge library of 10,000 clay tablets, which completely documented the lost Hittite Empire. Oops.
For centuries Western science considered snakes to be deaf. The recent discoveries1 that snakes can in fact hear has forced science, and the Encyclopaedia Britannica, to revise its work.
Back in the day, (around 3000 years earlier) David knew that snakes could hear just fine but just didn’t want to.
They have venom like the venom of a serpent, like the deaf adder that stops its ear so that it does not hear the voice of the charmers (Psalm 58:4-5).
David put the truth to music so he wouldn’t forget.
The Bible is a book of truth. Eternal, authoritative truth. It is a book inspired by God, written by men and accepted among Christians as the only infallible authority in all matters of life and faith.
The authority of the Holy Scripture, for which it ought to be believed, and obeyed, depends not upon the testimony of any man, or Church; but wholly upon God (who is truth itself) the author thereof: and therefore it is to be received because it is the Word of God.
The Westminster Confession of Faith, 1.4, 1646.
To the degree that science is in harmony with the bible, go science! But as believers, we are to test all things (1 John 4:1), for not every spirit is from God. Science has its false prophets too.
