Beautiful Specimens of Human Loveliness - Sermo Humilis

The more things change, the more things stay the same. Having survived the massacres of the 16th century, the … [Read more...] about Beautiful Specimens of Human Loveliness

Beauty that Saves the World - Sermo Humilis

In his book, The Idiot, Fyodor Dostoevsky introduces us to a character named Myshkin. Myshkin’s idea of life is to help rather than to harm, to give mercy rather than malice, to forgive again and again. Myshkin takes what is cruel and repulsive in the people and culture around … [Read more...] about Beauty that Saves the World

Antithesis - Sermo Humilis

We live in a binary world. Male and female, night and day, heaven and earth, good and evil, beauty and horror. It is this way because God made the world. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. (Genesis 1:4) Antithesis is the result … [Read more...] about Antithesis

The events in Ruth take place during the time of the Judges and Bethlehem is the scene. The book is not a romance, though it is a love story:  A Covenant love story. Bethlehem means bread, and at the time of Ruth, there was a serious lack of it. A Midianite invasion had caused … [Read more...] about #13 Kinsmen Redeemer – OT Survey

The Son Who Listens - Proverbs 1_8 - Sermo Humilis

Parents have an obligation to teach their children the wisdom of God and children have an obligation to listen and act on their wisdom. In Proverbs 1:9, the child who heeds his parents' instruction is being made beautiful through wisdom. Hear, my son, your father’s instruction, … [Read more...] about The Son Who Listens ~ Proverbs 1:8

Thor's Oak

Around 723 AD, a missionary named Boniface entered Hesse in Germany. Upon finding a sacred tree named Thor’s Oak, he took an axe to it, cut it down and built a church. Many in the town, believing that the God of Boniface must be greater than Thor, left their paganism behind converted to Christianity.
