Imperfect Fathers - Sermo Humilis

A father with flaws is a pain in the bum, but a perfect father would be unbearable. Now there's a sentiment that needs explaining. Kids get to a certain age and then start to comment, without any encouragement, on their father's faults. At least, that's how it is in my … [Read more...] about Imperfect Fathers

We, the Enemy

We the Enemy - Sermo Humilis

When the roll call begins, and the baddies are invited to step forward, no one ever does. The baddie is always the other guy. We are the goodies, or, if we can't - in good conscience - declare ourselves good, we declare ourselves innocent or victim. An old comedy sketch by … [Read more...] about We, the Enemy

On The Jericho Road - Sermo Humilis

Moralism is the art of making every bible passage a lesson on self-improvement. It puts man at the centre, rather than Jesus. It's a Christ-less take on scripture that either flatters the doo-gooder to his own harm or discourages the weak in his weakness. Case in point, the … [Read more...] about The Road to Jericho

Grace Abounds - Sermo Humilis

In April 1831 Charles Simeon, was asked by his friend Joseph Gurney, how he had outlasted all the prejudice against and throughout his ministry. He had already served 49 years in Trinity Church in Cambridge and would go on to serve another six before his death at age 77. He … [Read more...] about Where Grace Abounds

Thor's Oak

Around 723 AD, a missionary named Boniface entered Hesse in Germany. Upon finding a sacred tree named Thor’s Oak, he took an axe to it, cut it down and built a church. Many in the town, believing that the God of Boniface must be greater than Thor, left their paganism behind converted to Christianity.
