Gazing at Eternity

Staring at Eternity - Sermo Humilis

Gilbert Chesterton once pointed out that there was a time when you and I, and all of us, were once all very close to God so that even now, the colour of a pebble, or the smell of a flower, comes to our hearts with a kind of authority and certainty. They stop us in our tracks as … [Read more...] about Gazing at Eternity

People with a Large Heart

People with a Large Heart - Sermo Humilis

I met a man recently, a minister of the gospel, who was pretty beaten up. For whatever reason, after 20 years of ministry this guy had suffered two breakdowns as a result of the kind of ministry and the kind of congregation he was called to serve in. A man in this situation … [Read more...] about People with a Large Heart

One of the ways He expresses His delight is by inviting us to the party. He inviting us … [Read more...] about Puritan Joy

We want to hear about revival, rapture or a roll in the hay, not sacrifice. But sacrifice … [Read more...] about Sacrifice

Open the Heavens

Open the Heavens - Sermo Humilis

Like the Wizard of Oz, the gods of this world want you to be dazzled from a distance while they remain hidden behind a curtain. But the God who made Heaven and Earth wants you to share in His glory and the abundance and so He entered into this world. He entered into this world in … [Read more...] about Open the Heavens

Thor's Oak

Around 723 AD, a missionary named Boniface entered Hesse in Germany. Upon finding a sacred tree named Thor’s Oak, he took an axe to it, cut it down and built a church. Many in the town, believing that the God of Boniface must be greater than Thor, left their paganism behind converted to Christianity.
