The Lord of the Feast - Sermo Humilis

In Luke 22:19, Jesus institutes the Lord's Supper with the words, “This is My body, which is given to you. Do this in remembrance of Me.” The Supper is a meal in which we remember, and God affirms, the forgiveness of all our sins. A little later in verse 29, while still at the … [Read more...] about Lord of the Feast

My Orwellian Yoga Pants - Sermo Humilis

I used to be a fairly impressionable guy and, for the most part, I was willing to roll wherever my earthly appetites took me. But then I came to Christ, or, to be more accurate, Christ came to me, and I believed. Having paddled along behind Jesus these past 35 years, I find my … [Read more...] about My Purple Yoga Pants

You Can't Keep a Good Man Down - Sermo Humilis

William Tyndale was born around 1494 and died as a martyr in 1536. He is mainly remembered for his contribution to the Reformation in England and, in particular, his translation of the Bible into the common language. In 1526, Tyndale found a printer, Peter Schoeffer, who … [Read more...] about You Can’t Keep a Good Man Down

A Man Called Peter

A Man Called Peter - Sermo Humilis

Peter's life is a rich example of what it means to be held on to, rather than to be holding on. What it means to be made strong, rather than to be strong. His life was cut short, but the fruitfulness of his labour has been long, real long. Peter was one of Jesus Christ's … [Read more...] about A Man Called Peter

Dignity or Degradation

Dignity or Degradation - Sermo Humilis

The Nicene Creed teaches us that Jesus Christ is both fully man and fully God. "God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not created ...and became incarnate, and became man". John 3:16 tells us that God did this because He loved us. And I cannot think of … [Read more...] about Dignity or Degradation

Thor's Oak

Around 723 AD, a missionary named Boniface entered Hesse in Germany. Upon finding a sacred tree named Thor’s Oak, he took an axe to it, cut it down and built a church. Many in the town, believing that the God of Boniface must be greater than Thor, left their paganism behind converted to Christianity.
