Words that Matter - Shame - Sermo Humilis

Shame is man's ability to feel and express his humiliation for guilt. As a general rule, where there is no guilt, there is no shame. However, it is also possible to be so debased, so far gone, that you no longer feel your shame. Shame, where it exists, is powerful and … [Read more...] about Shame

Job - sermo humilis

The book of Job is a difficult book to read and so it is often a book that is avoided. One reason we avoid Job is simply that it bothers us. The book of Job is about a faithful man, a son, who is struck down by God. And even though he is restored at the end of the story, no one … [Read more...] about Afraid of Being Noticed

Keeping up with the Cool Kids - sermo humilis

Suppressing the truth doesn't come without effort. Our attempts to conceal God's truth are like a man attempting to keep his beach ball underwater. It's hard to maintain the pressure in a way that looks respectable. And when attempted, this is the kind of insane culture you … [Read more...] about Keeping up with the Cool Kids

The Bible anticipates persecution for the saints. We often don't. We tend to anticipate a life lived in lollypop lane. Consider this, therefore, a corrective tract for peddlers of the prosperity Gospel in our day. Having done our penance we expect our Heavenly Father to shower … [Read more...] about God’s Wonderful Plan

Thor's Oak

Around 723 AD, a missionary named Boniface entered Hesse in Germany. Upon finding a sacred tree named Thor’s Oak, he took an axe to it, cut it down and built a church. Many in the town, believing that the God of Boniface must be greater than Thor, left their paganism behind converted to Christianity.
