My Purple Yoga Pants

My Orwellian Yoga Pants - Sermo Humilis

I used to be a fairly impressionable guy and, for the most part, I was willing to roll wherever my earthly appetites took me. But then I came to Christ, or, to be more accurate, Christ came to me, and I believed. Having paddled along behind Jesus these past 35 years, I find my … [Read more...] about My Purple Yoga Pants

Jesus, Out on the Edges

Jesus, Out on the Edges - Sermo Humilis

A halfway decent church will preach and teach a Christ-Centred message. This is as it should be. But, as in all things, preaching Jesus at the centre of life has it's own pitfalls and one of them is that we keep Him off the other 90% of life that's lived out on the … [Read more...] about Jesus, Out on the Edges

Breaking Bread with Strangers

Breaking Bread with Strangers - Sermo Humilis

When believers gather, we gather as a result of the death and resurrection of Jesus. We also gather to proclaim that death and resurrection. That's the gospel. One of the ways we proclaim that gospel is fairly humble. We eat bread and drink wine. And so Paul, For as often as … [Read more...] about Breaking Bread with Strangers

A Simple Faith

A Simple Faith - Sermo Humilis

The Christian faith is not a complicated faith. Repent and believe the Gospel, that your sins may be blotted out and times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord (Acts 3:19-20). Believe that Jesus died and rose from the dead and in so doing, washed away all your … [Read more...] about A Simple Faith

Organising Our Thoughts

Organising Our Thoughts - Sermo Humilis

D.A. Carson once said that students do not learn everything you teach them. What they do learn is what you are excited about. They learn what you emphasise and they learn to organise their own thoughts around those things. The same is true of our own children. If what excites … [Read more...] about Organising Our Thoughts

Thor's Oak

Around 723 AD, a missionary named Boniface entered Hesse in Germany. Upon finding a sacred tree named Thor’s Oak, he took an axe to it, cut it down and built a church. Many in the town, believing that the God of Boniface must be greater than Thor, left their paganism behind converted to Christianity.
