They stop us in our tracks as … [Read more...] about Gazing at Eternity

Tell it Not in Gath - Sermo Humilis

The church has a long and unfortunate history of Christian overshare. From the Catholic confessional to the mid-week Bible study, believers have needed very little encouragement to spill the beans on themselves and, strictly for prayer, their neighbour. Truth be told, much of … [Read more...] about Tell it Not in Gath

The Great Commission - Sermo Humilis

Jesus Christ has given the church her marching orders and, while these orders were given specifically to the Apostles who were commissioned to lay the foundation of the church, they still have application today. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on … [Read more...] about Bat On… Reflections on the Great Commission

#10 - Doing Repentance - Studies in the Book of Ezra

Ezra was an Israelite, but he was also a government official. Now, here he is, throwing sophistication and decorum to the wind as he mourns the sins of his people. All of this has brought a crowd of sympathisers into the arena. Men, women and children were gathering to share in … [Read more...] about Ezra #10 – Doing Repentance

Dancing on the Edge - Sermo Humilis

From every angle, Abraham had a rather comfortable life up until the age of 75. He didn't have any kids, but he did have the comfort of family and friends in his hometown, and a beautiful wife. He also seemed to be gainfully employed and rather successful in the family … [Read more...] about On the Edge

Thor's Oak

Around 723 AD, a missionary named Boniface entered Hesse in Germany. Upon finding a sacred tree named Thor’s Oak, he took an axe to it, cut it down and built a church. Many in the town, believing that the God of Boniface must be greater than Thor, left their paganism behind converted to Christianity.
