One War, Many Battles

One Battle at a Time - Sermo Humilis

The demands of Jesus for loyalty are total. He is the Lord of Lords. But if we try and deal with those demands in total, we are quickly overwhelmed. It is no different to our anxiety over clothes and food. If I begin to contemplate how I will feed my family several kilos of … [Read more...] about One War, Many Battles

Where the Kangaroo Falls, There is Holy Ground

Violence - Sermo Humilis.png

Rarely a day goes by when I do not see at least one dead kangaroo on an Australian road. After a century of cars on roads, they're still not good at navigating the traffic and will often run in the wrong direction. I sympathise with each death, but the one I saw this week … [Read more...] about Where the Kangaroo Falls, There is Holy Ground

Puritan Joy - Sermo Humilis

Our God is a God of gladness and Jesus is a King who delights in the children of men (Proverbs 8:31), which is to say, He delights in you. Given who we are, this must be accepted by faith. One of the ways He expresses His delight is by inviting us to the party. He inviting us … [Read more...] about Puritan Joy

Dragons - sermo humilis

Fairy tales are often closer to gospel truth than many of the things that pass under the banner of the gospel these days. From bumps in the night to melting polar ice caps, children are taught to be either helpless or afraid. Fairy tales, by contrast, teach them to rise and … [Read more...] about Dragons

The Pitfalls of Public Prayer - Sermo Humilis

In Matthew 6:5-8, Jesus saw fit to caution the disciples about the pitfalls of public prayer and he had no problem pointing to a specific example of it in the public prayers of the Pharisees. We, on the other hand, would be hard pressed to find (or admit to), a single instance of … [Read more...] about Prayer

Thor's Oak

Around 723 AD, a missionary named Boniface entered Hesse in Germany. Upon finding a sacred tree named Thor’s Oak, he took an axe to it, cut it down and built a church. Many in the town, believing that the God of Boniface must be greater than Thor, left their paganism behind converted to Christianity.
