Neighbours - Sermo Humilis

Jesus points the man to the law and asks him what he thinks the law teaches. The lawyer gets it right and replies that we are to love the Lord and love … [Read more...] about Neighbours

They Would if They Could - Sermo Humilis

Every Jewish teacher in first-century Israel had to deal with the problem of Rome, and Jesus is no exception. When Jesus taught about loving enemies and going a second mile (Matthew 5:38-48), or told His disciples to return Caesar’s coin to Caesar (Matthew 22:15-22), He was … [Read more...] about We Would if We Could…

Words that Matter - Shame - Sermo Humilis

The Tender Heart - Sermo Humilis

In John chapter 11, we come to the last and most monumental public miracle that Jesus did. The raising of Lazarus from the dead. There is one later miracle, but it’s in the dark and very private because of how it happened. That miracle occurred on the night of the Lord's … [Read more...] about The Tender Heart

Words that Matter-Trustworthy - Sermo Humilis

I once heard the story of a mother who’d been lied to by her 6-year-old son. To make the point that lying is bad news and destroys the joy in relationships, the mum said, “OK, for the next whole week you won’t know whether I’m telling the truth or lying.” The next day, driving … [Read more...] about Trust

Thor's Oak

Around 723 AD, a missionary named Boniface entered Hesse in Germany. Upon finding a sacred tree named Thor’s Oak, he took an axe to it, cut it down and built a church. Many in the town, believing that the God of Boniface must be greater than Thor, left their paganism behind converted to Christianity.
