Doing What Jesus Would Do - Sermo Humilis

Beautiful Specimens of Human Loveliness - Sermo Humilis

The more things change, the more things stay the same. The world of the 21st century may look and feel very different from the world of the 17th century, but thistles still produce thorns and fig trees still produce figs. Having survived the massacres of the 16th century, the … [Read more...] about Beautiful Specimens of Human Loveliness

Beauty that Saves the World - Sermo Humilis

In his book, The Idiot, Fyodor Dostoevsky introduces us to a character named Myshkin. Myshkin’s idea of life is to help rather than to harm, to give mercy rather than malice, to forgive again and again. Myshkin takes what is cruel and repulsive in the people and culture around … [Read more...] about Beauty that Saves the World

In Galatians chapter five we read, For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself." (Galatians 5:14) This is a remarkable statement, don't you think? Everything that the law teaches and demands can be summed up with the command to love … [Read more...] about #08 God is My Neighbour – OT Survey

#07 Impossible Holiness - A Survey of Christ in the Old Testament

After three months of wandering (and grumbling), Israel has finally made it to Sinai. Here, the Covenant promised to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob would be spelled out and ratified in the giving of the Law and the sprinkling of blood. Having arrived at Sinai, Moses does not wait … [Read more...] about #07 Impossible Holiness – OT Survey

Thor's Oak

Around 723 AD, a missionary named Boniface entered Hesse in Germany. Upon finding a sacred tree named Thor’s Oak, he took an axe to it, cut it down and built a church. Many in the town, believing that the God of Boniface must be greater than Thor, left their paganism behind converted to Christianity.
