Lost and Found - Alone - sermo humilis

It's the human condition. We are terrified by God, we are terrified by each other, and we are terrified by loneliness. It's the reason Jesus came into this world, and it's the reason we killed Him. It's also the reason we need Him. I read somewhere recently that “If you love … [Read more...] about Lost and Found

Neighbours - Sermo Humilis

So there's this lawyer in Luke 10:25, an expert of the law in Israel, who asks Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus points the man to the law and asks him what he thinks the law teaches. The lawyer gets it right and replies that we are to love the Lord and love … [Read more...] about Neighbours

#08 God is My Neighbour - A Survey of Christ in the Old Testament

In Galatians chapter five we read, For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself." (Galatians 5:14) This is a remarkable statement, don't you think? Love Yourself - Sermo Humilis

Some people will tell you that the most important thing you can do in life is to learn to love yourself, or that you cannot love others until you love yourself. But self-love is ultimately unsatisfying. It is fruitless. It is lame. It is barren. Self-love gives nothing but … [Read more...] about Loving Ourselves to Death

Thor's Oak

Around 723 AD, a missionary named Boniface entered Hesse in Germany. Upon finding a sacred tree named Thor’s Oak, he took an axe to it, cut it down and built a church. Many in the town, believing that the God of Boniface must be greater than Thor, left their paganism behind converted to Christianity.
