Speaking the Truth to One Another - Sermo Humilis

In a recent interview, Journalist Walter Kirn told a story that says a lot about our deep desire to avoid displeasing other people with the inconvenient truth. On the morning that the Twin Towers in New York City collapsed (an event commonly known as 9-11), one of the richest … [Read more...] about The Inconvenient Truth

The Cost of Faithful Worship - Sermo Humilis

One of the things we learn from the opening chapters of 1 Samuel is that it's God who opens and shuts things. If Hannah cannot bear children it is because God has shut her womb. If Hannah bears a son it is because God has opened her womb. Beyond childbearing, we recognise this … [Read more...] about The Cost of Faithful Worship

Thor's Oak

Around 723 AD, a missionary named Boniface entered Hesse in Germany. Upon finding a sacred tree named Thor’s Oak, he took an axe to it, cut it down and built a church.
