The Sin of Believing a Lie - Sermo Humilis

Their first and most devastating sin was that they believed a lie. But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not … [Read more...] about The Sin of Believing a Lie

On The Jericho Road - Sermo Humilis

Moralism is the art of making every bible passage a lesson on self-improvement. It puts man at the centre, rather than Jesus. It's a Christ-less take on scripture that either flatters the doo-gooder to his own harm or discourages the weak in his weakness. Case in point, the … [Read more...] about The Road to Jericho

Meditating on Perfection - Sermo Humilis

The redeemed drunkard has this in his favour: He can look upon the altar and see the perfect flesh of a risen Lord for his salvation. The world can only offer a diseased liver. The repentant glutton can look to bread and wine for her salvation, while the world offers only the … [Read more...] about Meditating on Perfection

Speaking the Truth to One Another - Sermo Humilis

In a recent interview, Journalist Walter Kirn told a story that says a lot about our deep desire to avoid displeasing other people with the inconvenient truth. On the morning that the Twin Towers in New York City collapsed (an event commonly known as 9-11), one of the richest … [Read more...] about The Inconvenient Truth

Substitutes - Sermo Humilis

I was at the local shopping centre recently and I noticed big posters promoting fake meat sausages. Meat substitutes are not new, but in the last six months, there has been an increasing push for these substitutes. They have been winning awards left, right and centre, promoted by … [Read more...] about Substitutes

Thor's Oak

Around 723 AD, a missionary named Boniface entered Hesse in Germany. Upon finding a sacred tree named Thor’s Oak, he took an axe to it, cut it down and built a church. Many in the town, believing that the God of Boniface must be greater than Thor, left their paganism behind converted to Christianity.
