Who we Are Instead

The world loves to lay hold of the dictionary and determine the definitions. Politics, religion, faith, male, female, truth, lies.... and more. I prefer the old, unchanging definitions. I prefer reality.

Know the Truth - Sermo Humilis

I once heard the story of a mother who’d been lied to by her 6-year-old son. To make the point that lying is bad news and destroys the joy in relationships, the mum said, “OK, for the next whole week you won’t know whether I’m telling the truth or lying.” The next day, driving … [Read more...] about Honest Lips

Sheep Spotting - Sermo Humilis

"How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.” (John 10:1-24). Here, we have the universal excuse of all who are perishing: “Why wasn’t I told?” The question may be sincere, and most believers want to give a sincere answer, but there is a trap … [Read more...] about Sheep Spotting

Touch Hunger - him - Sermo Humilis

Touch is an incredibly powerful experience. It can crack hard hearts and heal heavy wounds. Touch is normative to our well-being and communicates life to those around us. It should not surprise us then, that in a culture obsessed with death, touch is to be feared, held in … [Read more...] about Touch Hunger

Thumb Suckers - Sermo Humilis

The gospel calls us to maturity, to complete manhood. It's written in scripture and it's written in our DNA. The mind and body are geared for growth and are a metaphor for what is meant to happen as we grow in Christ. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a … [Read more...] about Thumb Suckers

Entertainment - Sermo Humilis

Despite what we might think we are teaching our kids, most of them are perceptive enough to work out the priorities in life by the questions we ask. "Did you have fun (play the fool)?" Where you entertained (to hold the mind captive)?" "Were you amused (to deceive, … [Read more...] about Beyond the Jolly Fat Man

Thor's Oak

Around 723 AD, a missionary named Boniface entered Hesse in Germany. Upon finding a sacred tree named Thor’s Oak, he took an axe to it, cut it down and built a church. Many in the town, believing that the God of Boniface must be greater than Thor, left their paganism behind converted to Christianity.
