Death

Where the Kangaroo Falls, There is Holy Ground

4 September 2022 By David Trounce

Violence - Sermo Humilis.png

Rarely a day goes by when I do not see at least one dead kangaroo on an Australian road. After a century of cars on roads, they're still not good at navigating the traffic and will often run in the wrong direction. I sympathise with each death, but the one I saw this week … [Read more...] about Where the Kangaroo Falls, There is Holy Ground

God’s Wonderful Plan

4 August 2022 By David Trounce

A wonderful plan for your life - sermo humilis

The Bible anticipates persecution for the saints. We often don't. We tend to anticipate a life lived in lollypop lane. Consider this, therefore, a corrective tract for peddlers of the prosperity Gospel in our day. Having done our penance we expect our Heavenly Father to shower … [Read more...] about God’s Wonderful Plan

They Would if They Could - Sermo Humilis

Every Jewish teacher in first-century Israel had to deal with the problem of Rome, and Jesus is no exception. When Jesus taught about loving enemies and going a second mile (Matthew 5:38-48), or told His disciples to return Caesar’s coin to Caesar (Matthew 22:15-22), He was … [Read more...] about We Would if We Could…

A Place Among the Wicked

It is Finished - Sermo Humilis

Isaiah 53 tells us that they had given Jesus a place among the wicked. At least that was their plan. ...And they made his grave with the wicked (Isaiah 53:9) This was not a problem for Jesus and is another example of the irony we find throughout Matthew 27. They seek to put … [Read more...] about A Place Among the Wicked

Against Greed

Against Greed - Sermo Humilis

The story Jesus told of the rich man in Luke 12:16-21 is ageless and simple. A wealthy man has a bumper crop and tears down his old barns to build bigger ones, store his surplus and kick back with a whiskey. But suddenly, just as he was set to enjoy his new prosperity, he … [Read more...] about Against Greed

Thor's Oak

Around 723 AD, a missionary named Boniface entered Hesse in Germany. Upon finding a sacred tree named Thor’s Oak, he took an axe to it, cut it down and built a church. Many in the town, believing that the God of Boniface must be greater than Thor, left their paganism behind converted to Christianity.
