Fools Rush In - Sermo Humilis

Marcus Aurelius, Roman Emperor in the second century, once said that we should never value anything as profitable if it requires us to: Break a promise, hate our neighbour, curse, set aside modesty, play the hypocrite, or act behind walls and veils. What Marcus Aurelius … [Read more...] about Fools Rush in…

A Bad Case of the Touchy Feelies

Loose lips sink ships - Sermo Humilis

It's a modern trope in our culture that men don't share their feelings and that this is some kind of problem to be overcome. This, of course, is absurd. Men share their feelings all day long. Ask them if they've had a good day. Ask them what they think of John Deere tractors. … [Read more...] about A Bad Case of the Touchy Feelies

Wise to the Good - Sermo Humilis

Knowing the wrong thing to do, or the wrong kind of person to follow, is easy to figure out. But learning the right thing to do, and identifying the right kind of person to follow, or becoming the person you want to be and ought to be, is a much tougher mission. For my people is … [Read more...] about Delighting in the Good

Wide-eyed Delight ~ Proverbs 8

Wisdom find some things delightful, and other things detestable (Proverbs 8:10-13). It rejoices in God's handiwork, but recoils at the way of the wicked. In our age, wisdom is the kind of thing that gets dragged before the equal rights commission on charges of … [Read more...] about Wide-eyed Delight ~ Proverbs 8

Imperfect Fathers - Sermo Humilis

Kids get to a certain age and then start to comment, without any encouragement, on their father's faults. At least, that's how it is in my … [Read more...] about Imperfect Fathers

Thor's Oak

Around 723 AD, a missionary named Boniface entered Hesse in Germany. Upon finding a sacred tree named Thor’s Oak, he took an axe to it, cut it down and built a church. Many in the town, believing that the God of Boniface must be greater than Thor, left their paganism behind converted to Christianity.
