Keeping up with the Cool Kids - sermo humilis

Suppressing the truth doesn't come without effort. Our attempts to conceal God's truth are like a man attempting to keep his beach ball underwater. It's hard to maintain the pressure in a way that looks respectable. And when attempted, this is the kind of insane culture you … [Read more...] about Keeping up with the Cool Kids

8 Weeks Before Marriage - He Gave Himself to God

Marriage is not a two-way street in which both parties are commanded to give themselves up to each other. That is not sacrificial love. That is the idolatry of two little gods sitting on their respective thrones demanding to be fed and satisfied. In Ephesians Chapter 5, Paul … [Read more...] about 8 Weeks before Marriage – He Gave Himself to God

Jesus blood, never failed me yet - sermo humilis

God can be found, unsurprisingly, in the most surprising places. Take Waterloo Station, for example. Take a homeless tramp. Give him 4 minutes to sing anything he likes into an old tape recorder amidst the drunken ballads of his peers. In 1971 (a very good year on many … [Read more...] about Never Failed Me Yet

The Devils Dog - sermo humilis

When I first entered into the ministry I either stumbled upon or was given, some sage advice. Every few years this old friend makes a return visit to keep me mindful of how to navigate life's greasy bits and stay focused on the call that God places on each one of us. Stick … [Read more...] about The Devil Has Rabbits

Singing the Psalms - sermo humilis

The Psalms have always been central to a thriving church. And I would argue that the congregation that sets the Psalms aside is a church that will soon find herself in loveless mediocrity. The five books that make up the Book of Psalms were central to temple and synagogue … [Read more...] about The Rhythm of Life

Thor's Oak

Around 723 AD, a missionary named Boniface entered Hesse in Germany. Upon finding a sacred tree named Thor’s Oak, he took an axe to it, cut it down and built a church. Many in the town, believing that the God of Boniface must be greater than Thor, left their paganism behind converted to Christianity.
