The Sabbath Under Our Feet

13 December 2020 By David Trounce

With The Sabbath Under Our Feet - Sermo Humilis

Sunday is typically a day of rest for the church. We have several rest days, Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Christmas among them. For some these days are glorious opportunities to say no. For others, such days are demanding and we dread them. They hang over our heads like a dark … [Read more...] about The Sabbath Under Our Feet

Sit Tight, Carry on…

Sit Tight - Sermo Humilis

It's natural I suppose to prefer the grace of the prodigal banquet over the grace of the fiery furnace. But in the providence of God, you can't have one without the other. First the pigsty, then the party. According to Jeremiah 25:11-12, the Lord had given the His people into … [Read more...] about Sit Tight, Carry on…

He Shall be Their Peace

19 December 2019 By David Trounce

Peace Child - Sermo Humilis

Peace. Peace with God, peace with our conscience and peace with our neighbour. These three things are all necessary for lasting joy and contentment in life's suffering. Man is able to compromise regarding the third and for a time drown out the second. But he is powerless to do … [Read more...] about He Shall be Their Peace

16 Jesus, Leaving Egypt Behind - The Life and Times of Jesus

In John 5:1-14, Jesus, having completed a tour of Galilee, returns to Jerusalem for a feast, most likely a Passover. The previous Passover wound up in a scuffle with the Jews for trashing the temple. Here again, He will come into conflict, only the heat has gone up a notch. … [Read more...] about Jesus, Leaving Egypt Behind

In Praise of Standing Still

21 January 2019 By David Trounce

Be Still and Know - sermo humilis

We live and move in a world that no longer rests. What's more, the number of places that you can rest seems to be on the decline. But rest is not only a geographical reality, it is also a spiritual reality. One that can often be found in people. I have a friend, her name is … [Read more...] about In Praise of Standing Still

Thor's Oak

Around 723 AD, a missionary named Boniface entered Hesse in Germany. Upon finding a sacred tree named Thor’s Oak, he took an axe to it, cut it down and built a church. Many in the town, believing that the God of Boniface must be greater than Thor, left their paganism behind converted to Christianity.
