#35 Jesus, Miracles and Mercy - The Life and Times of Jesus

The storms of life are not random, nor are they uncontrolled. As judgements, they are a merciful reminder of judgement to come, that we … [Read more...] about Jesus, Miracles and Mercy

Know the Truth - Sermo Humilis

I once heard the story of a mother who’d been lied to by her 6-year-old son. To make the point that lying is bad news and destroys the joy in relationships, the mum said, “OK, for the next whole week you won’t know whether I’m telling the truth or lying.” The next day, driving … [Read more...] about Honest Lips

#34 Jesus, Binding the Strongman - The Life and Times of Jesus

The coming of Jesus into the world was more than a set-up for some future victory. Though for us the victory is yet to be fully experienced, the decisive demolition has been done. The prisoners of war have been set free and are now heading home for the parade. You and I are … [Read more...] about Jesus, Binding the Strongman

#33 Jesus, Women Who Serve - The Life and Times of Jesus

Until now, Jesus has used Capernaum as a base for ministry. He has headed out from there on short stints and then returned. Chapter 8 in Luke marks a change in the way Jesus has been doing ministry among the people. At this point, He leaves Capernaum and begins moving from … [Read more...] about Jesus, Women Who Serve

Tokens for Those he Loves - Sermo Humilis

God loves the material world, for He made it. He loves us material beings, for He made us, and placed on us the highest honour by making us as those who bear His image. There is a tendency to reject the material world in favour of some idea of a super-spiritual Christianity. … [Read more...] about Because His Love is True

Thor's Oak

Around 723 AD, a missionary named Boniface entered Hesse in Germany. Upon finding a sacred tree named Thor’s Oak, he took an axe to it, cut it down and built a church. Many in the town, believing that the God of Boniface must be greater than Thor, left their paganism behind converted to Christianity.
