Life in Christendom

What is the vision of life that we are called to delight in? What does life under the throne of grace look like for families, cats and bankers? Here is my attempt at making some inroads into the beauty of a Christ centred life.

Peace Child - Sermo Humilis

Peace. Peace with God, peace with our conscience and peace with our neighbour. These three things are all necessary for lasting joy and contentment in life's suffering. Man is able to compromise regarding the third and for a time drown out the second. But he is powerless to do … [Read more...] about He Shall be Their Peace

Making Jesus Visible - Sermo Humilis

Hope is energising and is the result of a hopeful vision. Without hope, we are resigned to either indifference or despair.  And without a hopeful vision, we are destined to walk around aimlessly as we slowly waste away. (Proverbs 29:18). And, so, as Christians, we need to have … [Read more...] about That the World May See

Gratitude, The Non-Crappy Version

Gratitude and Gods Love - Sermo Humilis

I recently heard someone say, "We don't deserve God's love and so, as Christians, we should be grateful that God loves us." Strange thing was, it didn't fill me with gratitude. It just upset my stomach. Somehow, being told I didn't deserve God's love didn't make me feel overly … [Read more...] about Gratitude, The Non-Crappy Version

No Trace Camping

No Trace Camping - Sermo Humilis

No trace camping is antithetical to the gospel and so my kids are under strict instructions to ignore the injunction. For the Christian man or woman, the goal is not to avoid interaction with the world, but to beautify it by adorning it with the gospel. This was the Apostle … [Read more...] about No Trace Camping

When Love Takes Hold

Love Covers - Sermo Humilis

John was a Disciple of Jesus. He was young, reckless and he was the one Apostle who lived to see all of those He loved die. John's self-description throughout his letters is usually, “the disciples whom Jesus loved.” This gives us insight into what it was that made John tick. … [Read more...] about When Love Takes Hold

Thor's Oak

Around 723 AD, a missionary named Boniface entered Hesse in Germany. Upon finding a sacred tree named Thor’s Oak, he took an axe to it, cut it down and built a church. Many in the town, believing that the God of Boniface must be greater than Thor, left their paganism behind converted to Christianity.
