Jesus, Clean the Cup

15 March 2020 By David Trounce

#40 Jesus, Clean the Cup - The Life and Times of Jesus

Hypocrisy is a nagging sin. It's subtle and it is sinister, often creeping in unawares.  It is a false claim to devotion. It is the attempt of an unclean heart to look clean by dressing itself up in all kinds of goodly deeds and words. It's horribly insincere and God hates … [Read more...] about Jesus, Clean the Cup

Jesus, Hard Words

23 Jesus, Hard Words - The Life and Times of Jesus

The Pharisees had a big problem. Their traditions were so intermingled with the law that they could no longer tell the two apart. And so, when Jesus came and re-issued the law, minus their traditions, it looked like blasphemy and hard words. This world is governed by great … [Read more...] about Jesus, Hard Words

22 Jesus, Salt, Light and Law - The Life and Times of Jesus

A Disciple is one who is, and is becoming, the beatitude man or woman. Seeing nothing in himself worth defending, he has quit trying to build his own reputation as righteous and instead he is in pursuit of the righteousness that comes from God. He recognises this same emptiness … [Read more...] about Jesus, Salt, Light and Law

Jesus, Lord of all Rest

18 Jesus, Lord of all Rest - The Life and Times of Jesus

Jesus' Sabbath healings in John 5 result in persecution. But this does not stop Him doing them when he returns to Galilee in Luke 6. Quite the opposite, He starts doing them all the more. The two incidents in Luke 6 teach us that for God, the Sabbath is more about compassion … [Read more...] about Jesus, Lord of all Rest

Full of Grace and Truth

Grace and Truth - sermo humilis

What should the world see when it looks at us? It should see Jesus Christ. Not a list of man-made regulations under which to bury Him, and not something approximating Oprah at a rave party. Our actions and our speech are always pointing somewhere. Either we are saying and … [Read more...] about Full of Grace and Truth

Thor's Oak

Around 723 AD, a missionary named Boniface entered Hesse in Germany. Upon finding a sacred tree named Thor’s Oak, he took an axe to it, cut it down and built a church. Many in the town, believing that the God of Boniface must be greater than Thor, left their paganism behind converted to Christianity.
