Fighting Shy

Fight Shy - Sermo Humilis

Sometimes, Jesus stood toe-to-toe with those who opposed Him. Sometimes He slipped away to avoid a clash (John 8:59). In battle, it's known as fighting shy. It's not a mark of defeat but a tactical manoeuvre. Withdrawal lets you catch your breath, duck for cover and refuel. It … [Read more...] about Fighting Shy

Jesus, Impossible Commands

#46 Jesus, Impossible Commands - The Life and Times of Jesus

We tend to want to make the gospel as easy as possible for others to accept. Palatable. But Jesus went the other way and often did it without explanation or qualification. We want mass appeal. Jesus wants true disciples. Hate your Mum and Dad. Hate your own life. Suffer the … [Read more...] about Jesus, Impossible Commands

Old Wives Tales - Proverbs 2 - Sermo Humilis

Life with God means leaving behind silly myths and old wives' tales. It means becoming more permanent, not less permanent. It means a growing reverence for God. And where there’s a reverence for God, there’s wisdom, and where there’s wisdom, there’s life. My son, if you receive … [Read more...] about Old Wives Tales ~ Proverbs 2

Jesus, Table Manners

#45 Jesus, Table Manners - The Life and Times of Jesus

Our table manners are a good indicator of what we think is going on when we gather to eat. Humility here translates to humility everywhere else. Charity for the person eating next to us here spills over into charity everywhere else. The direction of this world got underway in … [Read more...] about Jesus, Table Manners

Thor's Oak

Around 723 AD, a missionary named Boniface entered Hesse in Germany. Upon finding a sacred tree named Thor’s Oak, he took an axe to it, cut it down and built a church. Many in the town, believing that the God of Boniface must be greater than Thor, left their paganism behind converted to Christianity.
