22 Jesus, Salt, Light and Law - The Life and Times of Jesus

He recognises this same emptiness … [Read more...] about Jesus, Salt, Light and Law

Food and War - Sermo Humilis

There is very little more discomforting than hunger. It has been used for millennia as a tactic of war and we have all seen the consequences of starvation pictured in the media. A look at the poetry from prisoners of war during WWI and WWII shows just how obsessed these men were … [Read more...] about Food and War

21 Jesus, Persecuted - The Life and Times of Jesus

And so, the Beatitudes are not so much about doing as they are about being. They reflect the new man or woman that is … [Read more...] about Jesus, Persecuted

The Madness of Sin - Sermo Humilis

I know a Christian man with a wife and kids. He had the opportunity to work away from home for a while. Before he had even left he had made up his mind to be unfaithful and once he arrived, far away from family and friends he wasted no time hooking up with whatever his heart … [Read more...] about The Madness of Sin

20 Jesus, Hunger and Thirst - The Life and Times of Jesus

The Beatitudes follow a beautiful and logical progression. The first comes when we are confronted with God in the face of Jesus Christ. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven (Matthew 5:3) The Christian man, when faced with the law-word of God, is … [Read more...] about Jesus, Hunger and Thirst

Thor's Oak

Around 723 AD, a missionary named Boniface entered Hesse in Germany. Upon finding a sacred tree named Thor’s Oak, he took an axe to it, cut it down and built a church. Many in the town, believing that the God of Boniface must be greater than Thor, left their paganism behind converted to Christianity.
