But self-love is ultimately unsatisfying. It is fruitless. It is lame. It is barren. Self-love gives nothing but … [Read more...] about Loving Ourselves to Death

Heroes - Sermo Humilis

The modern concept of heroism, much like the pagan view through the ages, is that of a man or woman who fights to defend their honour. By contrast, the biblical view of heroism belongs to those who seek to defend God's honour. In a pagan world, a man's honour is tied to his … [Read more...] about Heroes

Come in, out of the Darkness

The Guilty Lover - Sermo Humilis

Jesus did not wrestle His angry Father to the ground and snatch the whip out of His hand. Likewise, God did not force His Son to be merciful to humanity. God loves His people and demonstrated His love by sending His Son to die. The Son loves the Father and so was willing to … [Read more...] about Come in, out of the Darkness

The Shadow of things to come - sermo humilis

The good news of the resurrection is that there is a real you, more 'you' than you can possibly imagine. And as you become more and more gripped by the life of Jesus you become more and more uniquely yourself. You become more and more of what God in Christ has made you to be. A … [Read more...] about A Shadow of Things to Come

A Bit About Slavery

13 June 2019 By David Trounce

A bit about slavery - sermo humilis

If you read the bible right through from beginning to end, one of the themes that quickly emerge is the theme of slavery and freedom. Adam is placed in a garden planted by God and told to tend it. This means growth, expansion. Adam would go out into the wider world and … [Read more...] about A Bit About Slavery

Thor's Oak

Around 723 AD, a missionary named Boniface entered Hesse in Germany. Upon finding a sacred tree named Thor’s Oak, he took an axe to it, cut it down and built a church. Many in the town, believing that the God of Boniface must be greater than Thor, left their paganism behind converted to Christianity.
