Entertainment - Sermo Humilis

Despite what we might think we are teaching our kids, most of them are perceptive enough to work out the priorities in life by the questions we ask. "Did you have fun (play the fool)?" 24 Jesus, Shaking Heaven and Earth - The Life and Times of Jesus

In Matthew 5:17, Jesus tells the disciples that He came to fulfil the law and the prophets. He came to put them both into force, to accomplish their purpose, satisfy their demands and fulfil their expectations. In the next verse, Jesus goes on to say, For truly, I say to you, … [Read more...] about Jesus, Shaking Heaven and Earth

Gratitude and Gods Love - Sermo Humilis

I recently heard someone say, "We don't deserve God's love and so, as Christians, we should be grateful that God loves us." Strange thing was, it didn't fill me with gratitude. It just upset my stomach. Somehow, being told I didn't deserve God's love didn't make me feel overly … [Read more...] about Gratitude, The Non-Crappy Version

23 Jesus, Hard Words - The Life and Times of Jesus

The Pharisees had a big problem. Their traditions were so intermingled with the law that they could no longer tell the two apart. And so, when Jesus came and re-issued the law, minus their traditions, it looked like blasphemy and hard words. This world is governed by great … [Read more...] about Jesus, Hard Words

Charity is the Character of the true man - Sermo Humilis

Charity is an old word that typically stood for the word 'love' in modern bible translations. It was not, first and foremost, thought of as a feeling but an act of self-giving for the sake of our neighbour. Charity is the manifestation of God's grace in human kindness, mercy … [Read more...] about Charity

Thor's Oak

Around 723 AD, a missionary named Boniface entered Hesse in Germany. Upon finding a sacred tree named Thor’s Oak, he took an axe to it, cut it down and built a church. Many in the town, believing that the God of Boniface must be greater than Thor, left their paganism behind converted to Christianity.
