#58 Jesus, A Warning - The Life and Times of Jesus

So, here we are in Jericho. Herod the Great, who slaughtered Bethlehem's boys during Jesus' childhood died here. After his death, a conflict erupted over who should take the throne in his place. We like to think of ourselves as independent creatures. We take it as a point of pride that our strength, endurance, patience and wit got us to where we are today. But, like a tree planted by streams of water, we are in fact, entirely dependant. We are dependent on the charity … [Read more...] about He Fills the Hungry

Jesus, Precious Gems

#57 Jesus, Precious Gems - The Life and Times of Jesus

As Jesus heads toward Jerusalem, the heat on Israel intensifies. Jerusalem has become a haunt of Jackals and unclean birds and upon that generation would come the blood of all the prophets that had been sent to her. But, among the wreck and ruin of humanity in Israel, there … [Read more...] about Jesus, Precious Gems

#56 Jesus, Who's Out and Who's In - The Life and Times of Jesus

Sinners have obstacles to God. They have nothing to commend themselves to God. But in the gospel, men like the rich young ruler and the Pharisee who have it all, have it worse, for they have no room for God. In Luke 18 we learn that it's the weak in society who are being … [Read more...] about Jesus, Who’s Out, Who’s In

Frustrated for Our Own Good

Frustrated for Our Own Good - Sermo Humilis

It's pretty clear what 400 men armed with swords plan to do. Frustrated and hungry, they plan to make mince meat out of an idiot and his household. At least, that was David's plan. David and his men had been in exile, hiding from Saul for some time. But they were not idle. … [Read more...] about Frustrated for Our Own Good

Thor's Oak

Around 723 AD, a missionary named Boniface entered Hesse in Germany. Upon finding a sacred tree named Thor’s Oak, he took an axe to it, cut it down and built a church. Many in the town, believing that the God of Boniface must be greater than Thor, left their paganism behind converted to Christianity.
