What we Call, a Victory

30 January 2019 By David Trounce

What we call, a victory - sermo humilis

In scripture, the reality always exceeds the metaphor. Satan is depicted as a snake. But he is much deadlier than any snake. Jesus is depicted as a lion. But his power far exceeds that of a lion. Therefore, when Jesus promises that the righteous will be as numerous as the … [Read more...] about What we Call, a Victory

Go to the Ant, You Sluggard

Ants for the Sluggard - sermo humilis

The bible is not a scientific book, it is argued. And I agree. It is way more than that. It is the final and only infallible authority on all science. It tells us how the world is made, how it is sustained, what it requires to flourish and how a lion kills its prey. Nothing … [Read more...] about Go to the Ant, You Sluggard

Weakness is the Way

When Weakness is the Way - Luger - sermo humilis

Nobody wants to be called weak, at least, not by the world's definition. The world despises the weak and has a habit of crushing them. There is a weakness that can get you crushed. But it is a weakness that's worth having. When God visited His people on the mountain at Horeb, … [Read more...] about Weakness is the Way

Feasting with Laughter

Feast for Laughter - sermo humilis

The hospitality of encouraging words does not always have to be grey or dull. Take communion as but one example of the many feasts we celebrate. What does the Lord's supper look like in your church? Are the faces of the people as stale as the bread sometimes is? Solomon once … [Read more...] about Feasting with Laughter

Meet the Fool

The Wise and The Fool Proverbs 9.10 - sermo humilis

The fool despises wisdom and discipline. But this not what made him a fool. This is just the evidence. What made him a fool happened way back when he decided God would not be his starting point. The fool is a fool because God is not axiomatic. The fear of the Lord is the … [Read more...] about Meet the Fool

Thor's Oak

Around 723 AD, a missionary named Boniface entered Hesse in Germany. Upon finding a sacred tree named Thor’s Oak, he took an axe to it, cut it down and built a church. Many in the town, believing that the God of Boniface must be greater than Thor, left their paganism behind converted to Christianity.
